He was half way through the book
when he threw it down
and the words fell all around him.
He looked into the face
of the final chapter,
into darkness,
no one else around.

And the cops came,
saw the book lying there, incomplete,
but they knew who to blame.
His characters gathered around
questioning what it is that he could have gained.

And they said,
"Couldn't you have a little
consideration for your fans?
Finish out the book,
keep the ink off of your hands?" (x2)

The book was 40 years old.
Each warm worded page
now lay ink covered and cold.
The characters are lonely,
left to fend all for themselves.
The remaining story never told.
